You may not find many purpose-made UTV-driving gloves, but fortunately the off-road, adventure and motocross industries offer plenty of options. Still, it’s hard to know what the best choice is. Motocross gloves can be very thin, and might not offer the protection and support you want for UTV driving. On the other end of the spectrum, adventure gloves can be overkill for a UTV pilot. They can be so thick they leave you fumbling for a positive feel on the wheel. In between theses extremes are some great options among premium off-road gloves, including my favorite for grabbing the wheel of a UTV, the Answer AR5 OPS glove.

And we’re off! The Answer AR5 OPS were my go-to gloves for test driving the all-new Kawasaki Teryx KRX 1000 at the 2020 King of the Hammers.

When I was invited out to the 2020 King of the Hammers to test drive the all-new Kawasaki Teryx KRX 1000 side x side, I immediately knew what to put on my hands. The very versatile, and comfortable Answer AR5 OPS gloves had already proven themselves to me on the bike, even on an adventure ride in Iceland. So they were a no-brainer for a cold, windy day behind the wheel of Kawasaki’s new UTV beast at The Hammers in Johnson Valley, California.

Read on for five reasons why the Answer AR5 OPS gloves are excellent for UTV driving.

1. Windproof!

Versatility is key! These are moto gloves, after all, and they can transition to the bike no problem.

Two words: Wind. Proof. For a cold windy day in the desert, there is nothing better than windproof riding gear, and the back of the Answer AR5 OPS gloves are lined with windproof material, which means no cold hands. And believe me when I say these gloves have been put to the test. I wore them on a three-day adventure tour in Iceland where icy highland winds, even at highway speeds, were no match for the windproof protection. Your paws will thank you!

2. Palm Protection & Comfort

An extra layer of palm protection and supportive neoprene cuffs add up to great comfort and support when the going gets rough.

In a line of Answer gloves from AR1 to AR5, the Answer AR5 OPS offers the highest level of protection. That includes a suede palm and a 2mm integrated palm pad. What this translates to is good grip on the wheel, obviously important since the wheel can get a touch slippery when the dust is flowing. The added layer on the palm helps absorb vibration—a big help on long days behind the wheel. It’s not too thick that you feel like you’re wearing catcher’s mitts, just a comfortable, effective lining with a positive, grippy feel in the palms.

3. Neoprene Cuffs

The soft neoprene cuff secures with a Velcro tab, and can be adjusted as snugly as you prefer, up to the point of offering added wrist support if needed. Especially on rough rides or long days behind the wheel—and certainly at King of the Hammers where we test drove the Kawasaki Teryx KRX 1000 UTVs—your wrists can get pretty worked, so the added support of the Answer AR5 OPS gloves can help you keep your strength and your reflexes sharp.

4. Touchscreen Sensitivity

The pointer finger and thumbs have excellent touchscreen sensitivity, even through dusty conditions. This allows you to operate tools such as GPS or your smartphone. Because, you know… Instagram or it didn’t happen!

5. Versatility

If you could see behind those hand guards you would see the Answer AR5 OPS gloves, my paw-protection of choice for a three-day Iceland adventure ride.

While the Answer AR5 OPS is an excellent glove for UTV driving, they are moto gloves at the end of the day, and can transition to the dirt bike or adventure bike very easily. I’ve had these gloves for nearly a year now and they have been my go-to glove for long days, cold weather or any time I wasn’t sure what I had gotten myself into, including my adventure ride in Iceland! TPR knuckle protection across the top of the glove means excellent protection even without handguards. They make great cold weather gloves (although they’re not great in wet weather; just cold weather), offer all-day comfort, superb grip and hold up to wind extremely well. And with a solid black color scheme they go with everything!

The Bottom Line

At $49.95, the Answer AR5 OPS gloves are on the pricey side, but these are premium gloves that your hands will thank you for. They stand up to the elements, they are easy to clean (machine wash and lay flat to dry) and have held up extremely well after nearly a year of use from motorcycles to UTV, from the deserts of Southern California to the Highlands of Iceland. They definitely have my five-star stamp of approval for comfort, durability, protection, support and UTV versatility.
