Hi. I’m Steve Mathis. You might recognize me from my 1999 Summer Cross win. Well, I’m here to tell you something. Brakes are important. They allow your motorcycle to stop, they keep you safe, and they’re very important to winning races. I know Tim Ferrier always liked his brake pads changed. So, on this week’s TransWorld BikeBandit How-To of the Week, I’m gonna show you how to change rear brake pads.

All right, the bike that we have is the 2010 CRF-450. A notorious for eating brake pads, so you’re probably going to get good at this. First step, you can leave your wheel on. First step you wanna do is get a flat screwdriver and basically pry the pads apart. Push the pistons back into the calipers. Gives you plenty of room to move in there. Get your A on there and slowly take that out. Pull the pin out. I prefer to do it one at a time. Here’s your old pads, here’s the new EBC Extreme Pro brake pads. Some people like to take a little bit of sand paper and rough them up beforehand. I can go either way on that. As well, some people don’t use the stock heat clip. On this one, I am going to use it, though, because of the Honda and the way they eat the brake pads up. So I’ve took the stock insulator off of the pad and installed it on the new EBC, available at BikeBandit, by the way, pads.

With the insulators in and lots of room in the calipers, you wanna install the pads. EBC brakes are kind enough to give you a new pin so you may as well use it. I put a little bit of Maxima Waterproof Grease on it. Put it in. Make sure you have the pad in all the way. I think one time I’ve probably installed them and forgot and my pads fell out immediately afterwards. So, and sometimes, you can’t always make it in there. So, simply pry. Give yourself a bit more room.

All right, both pads are in. Pin is in. It’s really nice of Honda to make this an 8mm head so it’s nice and easy. Tighten that up. You’re not quite done yet. What you need to do is very important. Simply drag the brakes. Here’s my other pad. I don’t know why Yamaha let me go. But, yeah, move the wheel, drag the brakes. And the first time you hit the track, do the same thing and break the pads in and mate it with the rotor and it’s very important.
